Positive reinforcement training is a great way to teach a dog to do anything he/she is physically capable of doing. Whether you want to teach a dog to calmly accept a nail trim, stop jumping on house guests, sit quietly while potential adopters walk by or to spin a big prize wheel, you can do it as long as you invest the time and energy into doing so.
At DSN, we believe that training can help get a dog adopted and, if continued by their new family, will increase the chances of them staying in their forever home. Check out the video of “Cookie” now named “Rhew” (below). It was only a few seconds long, but her new owner fell in love with her from the get go and some basic training had a lot to do with that. If you’re wondering how Rhew is doing, feel free to come visit her during Life’s Ruff … she’s one of the stars now!
With that in mind, DSN is proud to offer some very low cost training to qualifying area rescues. The training is in a class setting where rescues can sign up as many of six of their members or foster parents. We will do an initial 8-week training period and teach you some basics as far as positive reinforcement goes as well as give you some ideas as to how to troubleshoot problem behaviors. Rescues are also welcome to continue on a monthly basis if they so choose. The point of the program is to give the rescues and their foster families the tools not only to deal with challenging behavior, but the skills to train new behavior that will increase the chances of the dogs in their care of getting adopted.
If you already have a dog and are looking for some new training challenges, please check out Show Dog U! This is no ordinary training class. Show Dog U is a program offered by DSN to people who have an interest in becoming a professional trainer, have a desire to be on stage or screen with their pups or just want to learn how to teach their dogs some really cool tricks! Show Dog U is not just any class and you can’t just sign up for it. We do the class twice a year and you have to pass an audition in order to be accepted. Graduates of the class will be eligible to perform in our stage show, “Life’s Ruff.”
